Restored by the Sea

The ocean—vast, mysterious, and awe-inspiring—is so much more than just a beautiful backdrop to our lives. It’s alive, constantly in motion, and brimming with a dynamic energy that never ceases to amaze. For those of us lucky enough to witness its rhythms and transformations, it feels like being privy to the secrets of the Earth itself.

One of the most remarkable things about the ocean is its ability to change the landscape, often in dramatic and unpredictable ways. I saw this firsthand last New Year’s, when the beach outside my home in Puerto Vallarta was transformed overnight. The ocean, with all its might, had removed every grain of sand, leaving behind nothing but rocks. The shoreline, usually soft and inviting, felt unrecognizable. Yet, as if guided by an unseen hand, within just a week or so, the sand returned, and the beach was restored to its pristine, picture-perfect state.

This experience left me marveling at the ocean’s power. It takes away, cleanses, and then restores, as though it’s participating in a cycle of renewal. There’s a sense of wisdom in these processes—a lesson in letting go, trusting the rhythm, and allowing time for restoration.

Whenever I’m here, in this beautiful, warm, salty climate, my mood instantly lifts. There’s a peace that comes almost as soon as I step out into the salty air. The rhythmic crashing of waves has a calming effect, and I can feel the stress of everyday life washing away. I’ve always believed the ocean air and water hold healing properties, not just for the mind but for the body as well. The salt air, rich in negative ions, clears my mind, while the minerals in the ocean water seem to rejuvenate my skin and body.

When I’m back in Washington State, I bring a little of the ocean’s magic into my daily routine by adding Celtic salt to my water. It’s a simple practice that connects me to this place and reminds me of the essential minerals the ocean offers in abundance.

And it’s not just the beaches that the ocean transforms. Storms stir the waters, bringing dramatic energy to what’s often a tranquil expanse. While storms can feel chaotic and even destructive, they also play a crucial role in maintaining balance. They churn nutrients, nourish ecosystems, and remind us of the immense forces at work in this vast body of water. There’s beauty even in the turmoil, as darkened skies and frothy waves create scenes that leave us humbled and inspired.

The ocean is also a masterful cleaner, an unyielding force that reclaims what doesn’t belong and recycles what it can. It sculpts our coastlines, filters impurities, and delivers treasures onto the shore—from sea glass to driftwood, each telling a story of its journey through the waves.

Perhaps what’s most profound is the lesson the ocean offers about resilience and constancy. No matter how many storms pass or how often it reshapes its shores, it always returns to a state of breathtaking beauty. The tides may rise and fall, but the ocean remains a source of wonder and serenity. It inspires us to adapt, let go, and trust in the natural cycles of life.

For those who spend time near it, the ocean is more than a destination; it’s a living force that calls us to reflect, connect, and find peace. Whether it’s the rhythmic crashing of waves, the glistening horizon, or the simple act of walking along a beach, the ocean offers a reminder of the profound beauty and power in nature’s constant evolution.

So, the next time you find yourself gazing out at the water, pause for a moment. Listen to its song, feel its energy, and take comfort in its lessons. The ocean is a gift—ever-changing, endlessly renewing, and eternally inspiring.
